Why now?

The head honcho

Hi,

Timothy Ryan, Massachusetts Certified Arborist and tree monkey trapeezer started his journey into the oak forest in 2011 while engulfing in William Bryant Logan's Oak:The Frame of Civilization. Learning of the vast uses for oak and acorns, a flame was lit. Fast forward to 2015, he turns up in Greece, harvesting acorns, on a isolated island called Kea, in the Cyclades island chain. Marcie Mayer has been reviving and modernizing an ancient tradition of harvesting these 'corns for food and other uses. After much heated debates with the squirrels they have graciously allowed him into their circle of trusted acorn collectors. Their only request is that he teaches the world the importance of Oak trees and their tiny little wonder:
The Acorn

Once written from the history books as an abundant food source, we are bringing them back into the public eye. Ancient civilizations on 4 of the major continents once relied on acorns as a staple part of their diet. Ancient Greeks, Druids and Native Americans highly regarded the Acorns nutritious resource.

Seeing the growing need to utilize the resources around us, The Acorn Initiative was born out of a passion for creating a tangible connection to food in our urban and suburban landscape. Land for intensive farming near Boston has been skyrocketing in value, while our crop remains in your backyard, public park or favorite arboretum as a readily available food resource
